ABSTRACT

The rate of superficial mycoses are increasing in special conditions. This retrospective study was conducted to determine the epidemiological parameters of Pityriasis versieolor and Erythrasma during 1994- 2011. In this study, we assessed the results of direct microscopic study and the other data of the patients for Pityriasis versicolor and Erythrasma in 1994-2011. Of 2265, 1294 [57%] suffered from pityriasis versicolor, who were mostly males [60%]. The highest frequency was related to 20-29 year old and the lowest to 0-9. High school and university students were the most infected groups [33%], September was the most common period and the most common site of involvement was chest and abdomen. The people infected with Erythrasma [971; 42%], were mostly 30 -39 year old, males [58%], urban [98%], reported in July and involved in groin. The frequency of both diseases was high in active age group, males, and the hot months of the year, which are the most common predisposing factors

ABSTRACT

Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the larval stage of Echinoccocus granulosus, is a global public health threat. The aim of this study was to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of cases of primary and secondary hydatid cyst in the west of the Islamic Republic of Iran. A retrospective record review was made in 7 public and private hospitals in Kermanshah from 2004 to 2009. Of 526 files of suspected cases analysed, 291 cases of hydatid cyst had been operated upon and confirmed. Of the patients, 51.5% were females, 57.7% lived in urban and suburban areas and the largest age group [17.5%] was 31-40 years. The major organs involved were liver [64.9%] and lung [26.8%] and 18 cases [6.2%] were confirmed as secondary hydatidosis. Most patients [79.4%] had been treated with albendazole.Kermanshah province should be considered an endemic region for human hydatid cyst disease; greater efforts in prevention are needed

ABSTRACT

According to several reports the incidence of lingual thyroid in childhood are more than adults. This ectopic thyroid gland induced mild hypothyroidism with spectrum as normal or below normal. Generally, most cases of congenital ectopic thyroid appears as Cretinism. In this report we will introduce an adult with a lingual thyroid that induced adult hypothyroidism

ABSTRACT

Hydatidosis is the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus. This disease is endemic in Iran. There are many studies about hydatidosis in different regions of the country, but there is not any information about the disease in Kermanshah Province. This article will review all available data about hydatidosis in this province. Using web based search engines and a survey on medical student's theses, all the information about hydatid cysts in the province from 1986 -2008 was collected. During these twenty years, at least 482 proven cases of hydatid cyst have been identified in the province. Accordingly, the trend of hydatid cyst operation in the province has been growing and the average annual number of cases has reached 1.41/100,000. Frequency of disease in urban areas was slightly higher than rural areas and the rate of infection in housewives was more than others. Because of the growing trend of hydatid cyst operation in Kermanshah Province, which may be due to many different reasons, this province should be considered as one of the important endemic regions of hydatidosis in Iran

ABSTRACT

Papillary thyroid cancer [PTC] usually has an excellent prognosis with more than 90% survival rate at 10 years. Papillary thyroid cancer may be diagnosed with histological examination in patients underwent lobectomy. The necessity of performing a completion thyroidectomy [CT] is still a controversial issue. This study investigated the rate of contraralateral PTC in patients, who had completion thyroidectomy. We retrospectively reviewed the medical and pathologic data of 82 patients with PTC. These patients underwent thyroid lobectomy, followed by completion thyroidectomy during 1997-2007. Thirty three patients [40%] had PTC in the contralateral lobe. There was no significant difference between patients with or with out contralateral tumor regarding gender, age, primary tumor size or time to completion thyroidectomy. The presence of lymph node metastases and multifocality of cancer in the ipsilateral lobe increased the risk of residual disease in the contralateral lobe. The postoperative complication were infrequent and included: 6 [3.7%] patients with transient recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, 2 [2.5%] patients with permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, 9 [11%] patients with transient hypocalcemia and 1 [1.2%] patient with permanent hypoparathyroidism. Five patients [6%] developed hematoma in 2 of whom re-exploration was required. The prevalence of residual disease in the contralateral lobe of patients with PTC is significant. We recommend that a completion thyroidectomy should be considered for PTC treatment. Completion thyroidectomy can be done safely with acceptable low morbidity
